At SFDSF, we are cognizant that the inability to have a steady location to stay or call home can impact someone’s ability to maintain or find a job, their children to attend school, and maintain a healthy living. As such, SFDSF developed a highly effective and comprehensive homelessness prevention program that includes tenant support services, eviction prevention, and an outreach team who focuses on neighborhoods and properties that are at high risk of homelessness. We have team members that specialized and have expertise in providing case management, job training and job placement, mediation, budget counseling, and advocacy, including referrals to Public Assistance, legal and other supportive services to help people remain housed and stable, to prevent them from entering the shelter system.
SFDSF seeks to provide safe housing for people already in transition including emergency and shelter housing. For those living with HIV/AIDS, mental illness, and/or substance abuse disorders, SFDSF will help with transitional housing and supportive services in preparation for independent living.
Homelessness Prevention
Short or long-term Homelessness can cause a devastating long-term impact on children and adults who can no longer afford to live in their homes or apartments. Our prevention program is aimed at preventing roughly 85% or more of participants from entering or re-entering shelters and remaining in their homes.
Services include but are not limited to emergency food and utilities, job training and job placement, mediation, financial counseling, and advocacy, including referrals to Public Assistance when applicable, legal, and other supportive services so participants remain housed and stable, avoiding the shelter system. Our main goal is to help keep you in your home. Our highly skilled negotiators can mediate disputes with your landlord or advocate for benefits you may be eligible for as a tenant.
Contact us if you need help remaining in your home, including legal services for foreclosure prevention and welfare fair hearings.
Emergency Housing
Homelessness has been rising in cities all across America at an alarming rate, and New York City is no exception. On any given night, thousands of New Yorkers, including countless children, are sleeping in a homeless shelter.
SFDSF seeks to build partnerships with relevant city agencies to operate families and single adults shelters. We can ensure that safe, clean, and secure facilities for patrons and that they will be treated with respect and dignity. We work with clients to have them understand that homelessness does not define who they are, rather, it is an extremely difficult point in their lives.
Our program is centered on a holistic approach concentrating on solutions for permanent housing. Our dedicated staff will focus on the client’s strengths, safety, and recovery. While tailoring a comprehensive support services model to build stable, independent, and self-sufficient futures, including job training, employment services, parenting education, mental health screening, substance abuse treatment, and referrals to rehabilitation facilities.
If you are in need of temporary or emergency housing, please contact the New York Department of Homeless Services for additional assistance.
