The fight against obesity among children remains a critical health concern. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than one-third of American children and teens are overweight or obese. It is becoming harder for parents and children to make healthy food choices and get enough physical activity when exposed to environments that do not support healthy habits. In New York City, 1 in 5 kindergarten students and 1 in 4 head start children are obese.
At SFDSF, we want to help change these statistics and provide a positive environment for parents and children. Unlike many other serious concerns, obesity cannot be cured with a pill or a vaccine. Obesity prevention begins with changes in behaviors and access to safe and affordable indoor and outdoor physical spaces in our community, where people can learn and play. Hence, we are looking forward to collaborating with schools and other community organizations to support our M.A.R.S. program. Our M.A.R.S. program incorporates daily health habits along with teaching Life Skills through Martial Arts. The program promotes healthy play habits and active lifestyles for young people. The healthy habit of Play states that a variety of energizing activities can help the body stay strong, lean, fit, and fun in the process. In addition to focusing on physical healthy habits (Energy, Play, and Safety), our curriculum addresses habits that shape youth emotionally (Vision, Mind, and Family) and socially (Friends, School, and Community). The program’s mission is to positively impact the lives of young people by providing a safe place to play and coaches who care. Learn more about the M.A.R.S. program.
